We Can Make the World Stop

I’m a fashion arts student and I do this all the time; I spend an hour or more getting the perfect facial structure/body proportions to colour coordinating their outfits. God forbid if I start a new family in The Sims.

YES.
ESPECIALLY SIMS.

Every now and then I get the urge to draw Alex, an OC who doesn’t get much screen time because he lacks a real story right now. Quick speed paint.

WHY.
JUST.

When you followed a person months ago, they post after a period of not posting, and you can’t remember who they are/why you followed them

When you’ve planned out a whole story idea in your head and you’re so excited to write it but then you open up a blank word document to begin and realize that you actually know absolutely nothing about it and you’re completely lost in a sea of vague plot details and random dialogue.

Went to the studio for four hours, came out with only one page of sketches. Well then.
(Lol, j/k, I was doing online work for the other three hours.)
Spontaneous terrible fanart of Mononoke’s Kusuriuri top right, by the way.

Same Face Obsession

artist-confessions:

I first found out about same face syndrome from an article on tvtropes. Back then, I thought “okay I need to avoid this flaw in my work, ” and I started trying to work with different body types. I didn’t obsess about it, just kept it in mind for the future.

Fast-forward a year and a half later, and I start seeing confessions about same face syndrome everywhere. At first, I thought tvtropes got really popular on tumblr or something, but now I’m not sure where the hype is coming from. The fixation is so extreme that when one person posted a joke confession about it, it was taken seriously.

The thing that bothers me isn’t even the abundance of SFS confessions or articles about it on other blogs; it’s the way people react to it. They seem almost…angry when they discover an artist suffers from this flaw; it’s like they want to come out and say “how dare you have this weakness in your art!” Some people go as far as to say SFS ruins all work, completely disregarding the other skills an artist may possess. Many of the criticisms I’ve seen are phrased like demands or accusatory questions: “Why can’t you draw different body types?” “Draw different people!” “Are you even trying?”

I can only assume it’s treated this way because some of the artists who draw similar characters are technically skilled in other areas, and because of that, people get the impression that SFS is a conscious decision. People think because the artist is highly skilled otherwise, they could easily change up their characters and choose not to. But in reality, being skilled in shading and lighting doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have an easy time with differentiating characters. Character design can be a complex form of art that requires just as much study and practice as perspective or color theory. And like perspective and color theory, you have artists who struggle with it.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that SFS is just a flaw in artwork; it’s not leprosy. It doesn’t discredit all other areas an artist excels at or constitute laziness. I know people are entitled to their opinion, and I’m not discouraging others from critiquing artists on the subject, but I feel like the amount of disdain that comes with some criticism is unnecessary. You can be aware of SFS without being vitriolic about it.

Sorry this turned into a big-ass rant. I originally thought it only be a paragraph or two.

I agree. I keep seeing all these confessions about it, and while I know it can be a flaw in one’s art, dude bro it’s not THAT big of a deal. I’m still working on drawing varied body types and faces, but I still have a ways to go. I’m not gonna obsess over it, though. I’m more worried about my inability to finish more complete works, lol. I do find it a little creepy when some artists have the same type of anime face, but that’s probably because I don’t like certain generic anime styles.
